What Is Luwak Coffee?

Luwak coffee is made from coffee beans that have naturally passed through the digestive system of the Asian Palm civet, known locally as the Luwak, a small nocturnal creature native to Indonesian's forests. Guided by it's exceptional sense of smell, the Luwak selects the ripest, most fragrant cherries.

During digestion, the fruit-pulp is broken down by the animals stomach enzymes, while the coffee beans remain intact. Once the beans have passed through the Luwak, they are collected, thorougly cleaned and expertly roasted to perfection.

Luwak Coffee

Luwak coffee originated in 19th century Indonesia during the Dutch colonial Cultuurstelsal period (1830-1870). During this time, loccal farmers worked under a forced cultivation system imposed by the Dutch colonial authorities. Laborers were forbidden from tasting the harvests as it all belonged to the colonial goverment.
