The Legend Of

Luwak Coffee

Luwak coffee originated in 19th century Indonesia during the Dutch colonial Cultuurstelsal period (1830-1870). During this time, local farmers worked under a forced cultivation system imposed by the Dutch colonial authorities.

Under this system, 20% of farmers' lands were planted with export crops such as coffee and tea and laborers were forbidden from tasting the harvests as it all belonged to the colonial goverment.

But the farmers noticed that a small nocturnal animal, the Luwak (Asian palm civet), loved to eat the ripest coffee cherries. Later, they discovered the undigested beans in civet droppings. Curious, they collected, cleaned, and roasted the beans, and were surprised to find the resulting brew exceptionally smooth and aromatic.

What began as an act of ingenuity under colonial rule became a cherished local secret — and over time, kopi Luwak transformed from the "people's coffee" into one of the world's most exclusive brews.

JJ Royal Coffee Process

1) Harvest Season
Arabica and Robusta coffee plants produce their ripest cherries between June through September each year.

2) Natural Cherry Selection
The civet cat instinctively selects only the ripest coffee cherries with fully developed flavors. From there the beans undergo the civet's cat special digestive and fermentation process.

3) Collection & Cleaning
Beans are collected from civet droppings, thoroughly washed, sun-dried and polished to remove silver skin. This last step prevents bitter flavors from developing and ensures even roasting.

4) Sorting & Roasting
Beans are hand-sorted to meet strict Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) standards, then expertly roasted to bring out their unique flavor profile.

What Makes Luwak Coffee So Special?

Luwak coffee is celebrated for its extraordinary journey from nature to cup. Its distinction lies in two remarkable natural processes: First, the civet's discerning palate ensures that only the ripest, most fragrant coffee cherries are consumed. Second, as these cherries pass through the animal's digestive tract, natural enzymes gently ferment the beans, transforming the beans and unlocking a depth of flavor unlike any other.

Many aficionados cherish its exceptionally smooth flavor and silky aftertaste—qualities said to be unmatched by regular coffee.

Want To Know More About Authentic Luwak Coffee?

Due to its rarity and unique character, Luwak coffee is often counterfeited. Authentic Luwak coffee comes only from select regions of Indonesia, with very limited annual production. A low price or large supply should raise concern as genuine Luwak coffee is never made in bulk.

Many so-called "Luwak" coffees are suspected to be blended with regular beans that haven't undergone real civet fermentation. JJ Royal Coffee guarantees every pack is made from 100% authentic, natural Luwak beans - crafted to international standards and traceable to its origin.
