There’s something deeply satisfying about a perfectly brewed French Press coffee. It’s rich, robust and full of flavor. This is one brewing method that gives your cup an incredible velvety mouthfeel (no paper filters to strip away those natural oils).
If you love Indonesian specialty coffees (think bold, caramelly Toraja Arabica or a chocolatey Mandheling Arabica), a French Press brewed coffee further accentuates our distinctly rich flavors.
We don’t want to gatekeep an easy-to-follow guide based on Stumptown Coffee’s proven French Press method. This recipe delivers consistently extraordinary coffee under 5 minutes and raises the bar going forward!
What You’ll Need (for an 4-Cup Press*)
Coffee: 28g (about 4 tablespoons) of JJ Royal Coffee beans/ground coffee
Grind: Medium coarse (like breadcrumbs)
Water: 425ml water, heated to just off the boil (~90–96°C).
Equipment: French Press (4-cup size), wooden spoon/chopstick.
Coffee Ratio: 1:15 coffee-to-water. This is a great starting point for balanced strength.
*Just double the recipe for an 8-cup size French Press.
Instructions
1. Preheat Your Press with hot water. Swirl the hot water around and discard. This keeps the temperature stable during brewing.
2. (Grind and) Add Coffee: Weigh out 28g of your favorite JJ Royal Coffee beans/ ground coffee. Add the grounds to the preheated French Press. Give it a gentle shake to level the coffee bed.
3. Add Water in Stages (Bloom First): Start your timer as you pour. Fill the press halfway (~210ml water) and ensure all the grounds are fully soaked/saturated. Place the lid on top to retain heat. Let coffee bloom for 1 minute (CO₂ bubbles will rise to the top which is a sign of fresh coffee).
4. Stir at the 1-minute mark with a wooden spoon/chopstick to ensure even extraction.
5. Top up the 2nd half of hot water (215 ml) to reach 425ml total. Place lid back on (plunger still up) and steep until the 4-minute mark.
6. Press Slowly after 4 minutes. (Rushing can push fine grounds through the mesh and muddy the coffee).
7. Pour and Enjoy! If you’re not drinking it all right away, transfer the coffee to a carafe or thermos. Leaving it in the French Press will cause over-extraction and bitterness.
